Katsuragi Maru ( Imperial Japanese Navy): World War II: The aircraft ferry was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific Ocean west of Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea by USS Sturgeon ( United States Navy).^[2]
Lisbon Maru ( Japan): World War II: The transport ship was torpedoed and sunk 20 mi (32 km) north of Chushan Island, China () by USS Grouper ( United States Navy). She was carrying 1,800 British POWs. Over 800 were killed.
Yomei Maru ( Japan): World War II: The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific Ocean off Japan by USS Kingfish ( United States Navy).^[3]

Empire Wave ( United Kingdom): World War II: Convoy ON 19: The CAM ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean () by {{GS|U-562||2} ( Kriegsmarine).^[1]
HMT Lord Stonehaven ( Royal Navy): World War II: The naval trawler was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel off the Eddystone Lighthouse by S-112 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of all eighteen crew.^[4]

Empire Tarpon ( United Kingdom): The cargo ship was in distress in the Atlantic Ocean 500 nautical miles (930 km) west of Lewis, Outer Hebrides (). She was taken in tow but abandoned on 13 October and capsized and sank the next day 20 nautical miles (37 km) west of South Uist, Hebrides ().^[1]

Caroline Moller ( United Kingdom): World War II: Convoy FN 32: The tug was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea 12 nautical miles (22 km) north east of Cromer, Norfolk by S-80 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of three crew.^[4]

Hachimanzan Maru ( Japan): World War II: The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific Ocean off the eastern coast of Kyūshū by USS Drum ( United States Navy).^[9]
Lola ( Kriegsmarine): World War II: The sperrbrecher struck a mine and sank in the North Sea off Nieuwpoort, West Flanders, Belgium.^[4]
Thor ( Kriegsmarine): World War II: The auxiliary cruiser was damaged beyond economic repair by a fire at Yokohama, Japan with the loss of 13 crew.
Oronsay ( United Kingdom: World War II: The ocean liner was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean 800 nautical miles (1,500 km) south west of Monrovia, Liberia by Archimede ( Regia Marina) with the loss of five lives.^[12]
Uckermark ( Kriegsmarine): World War II: The supply ship exploded and caught fire at Yokohama. She was a total loss, 53 crew were klled.^[13]

Duchess of Atholl ( United Kingdom): World War II: The ocean liner was torpedoed and sunk in the South Atlantic north of Ascension Island by U-178 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of four crew.^[14]
HMT Orcades ( Royal Navy): World War II: The troopship was torpedoed and sunk in the South Atlantic 280 miles (450 km) north west of Cape Town, South Africa by U-172 ( Kriegsmarine).
Shigure Maru ( Japan): World War II: The transport ship was torpedoed and sunk in the South China Sea off Samarinda, Borneo, Netherlands East Indies () by USS Seadragon ( United States Navy).^[15]
Tonan Maru II ( Japan): World War II: The aircraft ferry was torpedoed and sunk inside Kavieng Harbour, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea by USS Amberjack ( United States Navy). She was later salvaged and repaired.^[8]

Palatia ( Kriegsmarine): World War II: The prisoner transport ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Hampden of 489 Squadron, RNZAF with the loss of 986 of the 1,034 people on board.
S 7 ( Soviet Navy): World War II: The S-class submarine was torpedoed and sunk in the Baltic Sea () by submarine Vesihiisi ( Merivoimat) with the loss of 44 of her 48 crew. The survivors were taken as prisoners of war.^[22]

Remmaren ( Sweden): World War II: The cargo ship struck a mine and sank off the coast of Norway.^[23] All 47 crew were rescued.^[24]

Empire Turnstone ( United Kingdom): World War II: Convoy ONS 136: The cargo ship straggled behind the convoy. She was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean () by U-621 ( Kriegsmarine).^[1]
Seiko Maru ( Japan): World War II: The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan by USS Kingfish ( United States Navy).^[3]

USS Seminole ( United States Navy): World War II: The Navajo-class fleet tug was shelled and sunk in the Pacific Ocean off Tulagi, [Solomon Islands]] by Imperial Japanese Navy ships with the loss of one of her 80 crew.

USS Porter ( United States Navy): World War II: Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands: The Porter-class destroyer was torpedoed and damaged in the Pacific Ocean north east of Guadalcanal, Marshall Islands . She was subsequently scuttled by USS Shaw ( United States Navy) due to damage received.
President Coolidge ( United States): World War II: The ocean liner struck a mine in the Pacific Ocean off Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu and sank. All 5,340 people on board were rescued.
USS Hornet ( United States Navy): World War II: Battle of Santa Cruz Islands: The Yorktown-class aircraft carrier was sunk with the loss of 140 of her 2,919 crew.

27 October

Hokuango Maru ( Japan): World War II: The cargo liner was torpedoed and sunk in the South China Sea off Indochina by USS Tautog ( United States Navy).^[25]

Bengt Sture ( Sweden): World War II: The ore carrier was torpedoed and sunk in the Baltic Sea by Shch-406 ( Soviet Navy). Four survivors were rescued by Shch-406 and sent to Leningrad but never heard of again.^[26]
Butia ( Brazil): World War II: The cargo ship ran aground and was wrecked off Piauí.^[27]
Nagpore ( United Kingdom): World War II: The cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in the Pacific Ocean by U-509 ( Kriegsmarine).^[10]
